Why independent certification matters in a crowded sustainability landscape
08-Apr-2025
In an industry awash with sustainability claims, the ACRS Sustainable Constructional Steel (SCS) Certification Scheme stands apart – providing independent, third-party verification of a product’s sustainability credentials using rigorous ESG criteria.
Developed to meet the growing demand for responsible construction materials, the SCS Scheme ensures that constructional steel, regardless of where it is produced, meets globally recognised environmental, social, and governance benchmarks. It aligns directly with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and is built on a robust auditing process that covers more than 100 criteria across the full steel supply chain, from raw materials to site delivery.
ACRS is seeing increasing demand for its SCS Scheme as designers, builders and others seek credible ways to demonstrate compliance with sustainability frameworks, reduce project risk, and meet growing regulatory and investor expectations.
In this landscape, not all certification schemes are created equal. Many fail to assess critical factors – such as modern slavery, carbon intensity, labour practices, or supply chain transparency – in a meaningful way.
The ACRS SCS Scheme, however, applies fixed-term certification, public traceability, digital verification, and full-scope ESG assessment, setting a benchmark for what credible sustainability certification should look like. The SCS scheme requires the independent verification of sustainability claims through the onsite audit process.
Importantly, the Scheme is recognised by the Green Building Council of Australia under the Responsible Products program, achieving ‘Best Practice’ across all five Green Star credit categories. It also supports a range of other international certification systems including BREEAM, LEED, and Singapore’s SGBP.
In a market where greenwashing risks are increasing and project stakeholders are demanding proof, not promises, ACRS’ independent, not-for-profit certification gives specifiers, builders, and clients the assurance they need to make truly responsible choices.
When it comes to steel, sustainability starts with verified ESG performance, which is s exactly what the ACRS SCS Scheme delivers.
