NZ regulatory changes, import impact with Hard Hat Talk

01-May-2025

ACRS Executive Director Dr Andrew Wheeler joined the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand, or BOINZ, to share his insights on developments in the New Zealand construction industry.

In this issue of Hard Hat Talk, he discusses new regulations which will allow overseas-certified steel products into New Zealand. The regulations are aimed to ease supply pressures, but strict compliance with NZ’s seismic and durability standards remain essential. Each product must still be assessed to ensure it meets the NZ Building Code and is suitable for local conditions.

Andrew Wheeler shares what these new regulations will mean in terms of the international market and checking compliance, and othertopics including

  • What changes are coming in for steel in New Zealand
  • What impact using recognised alternative standards for compliance might have on the New Zealand market
  • What the difference is between NZ standards and overseas standards
  • How compliance to the NZ standard is determined
  •  How building officials and steel users can continue to make sure steel is safe
